The main character, Sun Fugui, was born in the late 1960s in a mountain village in the Wumeng Mountains in northern Yunnan, where the Sun family migrated from Nanjing and lived for hundreds of years. In the remote and harsh environment, survival is a miracle. Poverty, ignorance and selfishness are the destiny of most of the mountain people here, but Sun Fugui is a bright young man with a bright mind and high aspirations.
